PLACES STILL AVAILABLE - BRA ANNUAL CONFERENCE & AGM 7 DECEMBER

A reminder to everyone that the BRA conference, The Philanthropy Files, will take place on Tuesday 7th December. A concessionary rate is available to students or the unwaged (including those in retirement).

The archives of charitable and philanthropic bodies are an exciting and comparatively under-used source for British history while their interpretation, custody and care can be challenging. The Philanthropy Files will be of special value to those working with the records of charities, historians, archivists and anyone with an interest in the rich documentary record of British benevolence.

At a time when many charities are facing severe cuts it is all the more important that those who have custody and an interest in the use of such records should attend this conference, which puts these important collections directly under the spotlight. Current problems facing those caring for the archives of charities, survival strategies, the impact of digital technology and the implications of financial cuts will be addressed by Rob Baker (Head of Archive and Library, Royal Society of Arts) and Ian Wakeling (Records, Archive and Data Protection Manager, The Children's Society)

Other speakers are: Dr Carole Rawcliffe, Professor of Medieval History, University of East Anglia; Susan Snell, Archivist and Records Manager, Library and Museum of Freemasonry; Dr Anne Summers, Honorary Research Fellow, Birkbeck College; Dr Leanne McCormick, Lecturer in Modern Irish Social History, University of Ulster; and Susannah Rayner, Head of Archives & Special Collection, School of Oriental & African Studies.

The annual Maurice Bond lecture, The Changing Fashions and Fortunes of Philanthropy, will be given by Dr Frank Prochaska. Dr Prochaska, who has written extensively on the role of charities, philanthropy and royalty, will reflect on the history and implications of philanthropic contributions to our society.

The Conference takes place at the Freemasons' Hall, Great Queen Street, London, WC2B 5AZ, on Tuesday the 7th December 2010.
