medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture
Subject to correction, but didn't the Council of Trent bring to an end the era of Books of Hours? These were replaced by various other prayer-books and devotional manuals, the earliest edited by counter-reformers such as Peter Canisius. In English the most famous was Challoner's very popular Garden of the Soul (1740). I'm not sure what was the 18th-century French equivalent; later it was the Paroissien romain.

There's an old article by Herbert Thurston here: <http://www.newadvent.org/cathen/12350a.htm>. -- Paul
