I had completely forgotten about the whole presonification of virtue in medieval art aspect. Very useful - thank you. I will follow up some of the references you have all kindly provided. I must apologise - I realise I gave no context for my request. My thesis is conerned with the transmission of C12th and C13th scholastic/monastic theories about the acquisition of virtue (virtue as a habitus or disposition of the will or soul) into late C14th and early C15th Middle English religious writing. So my own work is on instrumental techniques for acquiring virtue, rather than its representation.
