I’ve been asked to forward the responses to the list I received yesterday to my query about IE7 so here goes :

It would seem that the electronic staff record system (ESR) is security compromised if you remain on IE6. Also some of the newer NHS websites here in England are optimised for 7 and won’t work with 6.

Here are the links to documents people sent me and I’ve included a couple of responses below too:

There was a survey sent out (possibly on survey monkey) where we were asked to give our Trust’s timescale for installation of IE7.

Here’s an extract which might lead you to the proof you need

5. In January 2010, Connecting for Health issued guidance to Trusts advising them to upgrade to IE7 or above as soon as possible. From the end of June 2010, IE6 will no longer be a supported browser for the NHS Electronic Staff Record. If your Trust is not planning to do this within 6 months (i.e. by end December 2010), what reasons do they give for this?

We use the NHS Choices website as one of our resources for answering consumer health information questions from the public, but this morning I’m getting complaints that its not working for some staff.

Having a look around with one of our staff in Southampton, it seems he’s having problems because it uses functionality that IE6 doesn’t support (this only changed overnight when Choices apparently launched a new version of their site).  Consequently, massive chunks of the site don’t work any more for those of our staff who still have IE6 – those of us with IE7 haven’t noticed more than a cosmetic change.

I bet you’re aware of this issue on other sites as well – I know I was before I managed to convince IT to change my browser to IE7, and its only going to get worse as time goes on, and as the link shows that Rowena sent around, there are security weaknesses with IE6 too.

Also if you missed it yesterday Rowena sent this to the list

http://nww.connectingforhealth.nhs.uk/infrasec/iststatements/apologise (its an nww site so probably only available from NHS networks) but I can copy and paste content if you need it.

followed up by a user notice for ESR which is I can forward to anyone who requests it.

Many thanks,

Rowena Perry

Hi Derick

We support the information needs of our local NHS here.  I have a meeting with their IT Head in a few weeks and this is one of the issues to be raised.  I would be very grateful if you get a source you would let me know.

Many thanks.

Rob

Apologies for cross posting (I sent this to core content list only it hasn’t seemed to have worked)

I seem to remember a recent proclamation (probably from Sir Muir Gray’s office but can’t remember for certain) saying that NHS trusts should now be using Internet Explorer 7 as our web browser. Did I dream this (To dream the impossible dream, To fight the unbeatable foe, To bear with unbearable sorrow, To run where the brave dare not go…..) or was it true? If it is true can anyone point out where I might find this, I need some documented proof to show our IT department.
