APD Conference 2010, Thursday 18 November

Inspired to Learn?

The Academic and Professional Publishing Division of The Publishers Association will hold its annual conference from 14.00 - 17.30 on Thursday 18 November at the ICO Conference Centre, 22 Berners Street, London W1T 3DD. It will be followed by a drinks reception.

Inspired to Learn? aims to examine the changing resources needs of the communities served by academic publishers; to discover how publishers are addressing these; and to explore how publishers, academics and librarians can work more closely together to continue to develop relevant, cost-effective teaching, learning and research materials in the current economic climate.

Some conference highlights:

*	Keynote address. Dr Geoffrey Copland CBE, FInstP, FRSA, formerly Vice-Chancellor, University of Westminster. Dr Copland will look at the implications of funding changes in British universities, following an introduction from conference chair Graham Taylor, Director of Academic & Professional Publishing, The Publishers Association.

*	Creating, developing and using an e-learning platform. Michelle Neil, VP & Director, Higher Education Digital Programmes, Pearson International, and Elizabeth Jones, Teaching Fellow in Economics, University of Exeter Business School will share insights

*	Teaching and Learning Resources in Universities: how they are used and how they can be improved. Dr Mark J P Kerrigan, Senior Lecturer, Educational Development Unit, Greenwich University will talk about resources he uses for teaching and the 'ideal' resources he would like from publishers

· Discoverability, Definition, Deployment: the challenges of making e-publishing visible. Sarah Pearson, E-Resources Co-ordinator at the University of Birmingham and Chair of KBART, Robert Faber, Editorial Director of Scholarly and General Reference Publishing at OUP, and Kieron Smith, MD of The Book Depository, will demonstrate how they are rising to the challenges posed by 'discoverability'

*	Student panel. In a panel session chaired by Dr Mark J P Kerrigan, students from several key disciplines will each give short talks on what types of resource they like best or find most useful, and then take questions from the floor.

The formal part of the conference will conclude with an open forum.

Who should attend?

We hope that the conference programme will appeal to a wide constituency of lecturers, librarians, publishers and students of publishing. It is particularly aimed at those working in the development, use, sale or purchase of electronic publications and platforms of all kinds.
