Free training day – Working with young
people
Renaissance
South East and Strategic Commissioning
Date: Friday 14 January
2010
Time: 10.00 to 16.00
Venue: Chatham Historic
Dockyard, Kent
Engaging with young people can bedifficult. They don’t necessarily see museums as relevant to their lives. However
through listening to them, respecting their views, providing the kind of experiences
they need at the right time for them, museums can be of value to young people.
This exciting day will offer a good balance of principles, practical skills and
inspiring examples that will be relevant to museums just beginning to work with
young people as well as those wanting to extend what they can offer.
Drawing on extensive experience, The
Might Creative will start the day with a policy context and understanding of
the principles of working with young people. A participatory workshop will then
develop participant’s practical skills in consulting young people. The
participation toolkit recently developed for Renaissance South East will also
be available to participants. A series of short inspiring case studies and “how
to” sessions on offering high quality work experience placements and developing
engaging provision for young people in schools will almost complete the
programme. The day will be rounded off by Melissa Strauss of HLF providing participants
with insight into what makes an excellent “Young Roots” funded project.
Contributors to the course
include: The Might Creatives, Claire Adler (consultant), Chatham Historic
Dockyard Trust, Brighton Museums, HLF
Feedback from previous courses in this
programme has been extremely positive:
“Fantastic, well organised, inspiring
and useful. Excited to “steal” some
of the fab ideas I learned about today.”

for participants from outside the region.
