Fennia is a biannual international peer-review journal dedicated to all fields of geography. The Open Access issue at hand marks a new beginning for this time-honoured eminent journal. All contents will be available free of charge. Our aim is to include in the system back issues in due course. Vol. 188 No. 1 is a 148 page Special Issue of the 3rd Nordic Geographers Meeting (NGM) that was held in Turku, Finland, 8-12 June 2009, consisting of two Review Articles based on keynote lectures, and eight Original Papers that emerge from parallel session presentations. The OA platform is provided by the Federation of Finnish Learned Societies (Tieteellisten Seurain Valtuuskunta, TSV) and based on Open Journal Systems (OJS) journal management and publishing system. All articles are identified by a Uniform Resource Name (URN). These are intended to serve as persistent, location-independent, resource identifiers. We hope you enjoy the new Journal format. Please let us know of any potential faults or bottlenecks that you encounter in the system, and we shall try to fix these as soon as possible.
