We need to be very clear about the list ownership/moderation role. They are the servants of the list, not its masters. If the declared or de facto emphasis is to alter, something we should consider by consensus, then their role is to implement the wishes of the list membership as expressed by them in open forum.

The moderators are custodians on our behalf. We may not always agree with them in our individual dealings, but we have appointed them to manage, as best they can, the consensus of the list over the way it is operated.

As a list member I am content that the emphasis of the list be discussed and that all who desire give input into it. But I do not believe that we have empowered anyone to make what changes they think are necessary. I'm pretty sure you do not mean that either. Let's discuss any putative change of emphasis with pleasure and then, by consensus, ask the moderators to implement our wishes. Such discussion is highly relevant to the list, its conduct and its membership. It has been a substantial time since we had such a discussion. It will also empower our newer members to know that their opinions on our direction matter.

Now I am not 'asking for a discussion' in any real manner. I see the list as self managing to a great extent, and I see no reason for alteration. Others may disagree. If someone, anyone, even, perhaps especially, someone who has never posted before, feels we should debate it, they do not need to wait to be asked. As a formality we might ask them to preface the subject line with [List Business] to separate it from other discussions. I'll join the discussion if I feel I have anything of value to add, but I am not going to start it.
