Hi Valeska,
Thanks for letting us know about this.

This seems like an good example of psychological practices and discourses that we collectively might want to critique using our new BPS status? What do other people think? Is anyone planning on going to this conference?

Danny

Subject: [COMMUNITYPSYCHUK] FW: 'Paraphilic Coercive Disorder' the Medicalisation of Rape

Hi everyone,

I thought this might be interesting to at least some people on here. Unfortunately, the date for the meeting below has now passed but there is an online petition at http://www.ipetitions.com/petition/zucker2010/ in case you wanted to add your voice or make use of the ample opportunities to deconstruct both the rhetoric and practices employed by Zucker as well as those of the petition and campaigners... :)

Professor Ken Zucker ( <http://www.camh.net/research/scientific_Staff_profiles/bio_detail.php?cuserID=42> http://www.camh.net/research/scientific_Staff_profiles/bio_detail.php?cuserID=42) has been invited as a keynote speaker to the Division of Clinical Psychology's annual conference, being held in Manchester this December ( <http://www.dcpconference.com/> www.dcpconference.com). This is despite his controversial 'treatment' and diagnosis of children with 'Gender Identity Disorder' (Hill et al. 2005). This diagnosis has received much criticism, particularly in relation to its association with homosexuality and its treatment being used as a means to 'prevent' homosexuality and transsexualism (e.g. Langer & Martin, 2004). This diagnosis is based on rigid gender roles, with young girls choosing not to dress in stereotypically 'feminine' clothes being a common reason for referral to Zucker's GID clinic (Zucker & Bradley, 2004).

Zucker is also Chair of the DSM Work Group proposing 'Paraphilic Coercive Disorder' for the DSM-5. This disorder requires an individual to have 'forced sex on three or more nonconsenting persons' ( <http://www.dsm5.org/> www.dsm5.org). This diagnosis has also received much criticism due to fears that it will be grossly misused within the legal system (Moser, 2009) and threaten feminist efforts to broaden the definition of rape.

A meeting is being held on Tuesday 16th November 2010 at 6.00pm, at Manchester University Student Union Meeting Room 3, to discuss Zucker's visit to Manchester .

Please come to the meeting to share your views and ideas, and forward this email to any group or network that would be interested in attending.

Thanks,

Jemma
