Hello,

I have been modelling alcohol-realted mortality using hierarchical spatial models, namely the Besag, York and Mollie model. This involves the car.normal prior.

Is it ok to use Andrew Gelman's pV as a substitute for pD when calculating DIC for hierarchical models? My pD values are negative in some cases, but using the pV models results in much more sensible model selection.

Ideally I would continue to try more models to find one which wouldn't result in a negative pD, but unfortunately I'm very low on time.

Any advice would be really appreciated.

Kind regards
Emma Robinson
