The Oxford Radcliffe Hospitals is one of the largest NHS teaching trusts 
in the country. It provides a wide range of general and specialist 
clinical services and is a base for medical education, training and 
research.

The Trust comprises of three hospitals - the John Radcliffe and 
Churchill Hospitals in Headington and the Horton Hospital in Banbury.


The Centre for Statistics in Medicine in Oxford (Director: Professor 
Doug Altman) carries out collaborative medical research projects, a 
methodological research programme, and teaching. Members of the Centre 
have a particular interest in randomised controlled trials, systematic 
reviews, prognostic and diagnostic studies.

The Centre currently employs 15 statisticians and other researchers and 
is part of the Department of Clinical Pharmacology, University of 
Oxford. The Centre has recently relocated to an attractive site at

Applications are invited for a medical statistician to join the NHS 
statistical support team, currently comprising 5 statisticians. The 
support team provides statistical input to the Research Design Service 
South Central and expert statistical input into collaborative health 
research. Projects include phase II-III national and international 
randomised controlled trials and observational studies.

The statistician typically collaborates directly with the lead 
researcher, taking responsibility for the design, analysis and clear 
interpretation in public dissemination. Some projects are in 
collaboration with the Oxford Clinical Trials Unit for Mental Illness 
and the Oxford Vaccine Group, both UKCRN Registered Clinical Trials 
Units. Members of the support team also carry out methodological 
research, offer statistical advice to researchers and run statistical 
courses.

The successful applicant would be expected to provide statistical 
collaboration and consultancy with clinical researchers across several 
medical areas. In addition, the post holder may participate in applied 
statistics research and contribute to the Centre's teaching programme.

Applicants should ideally have a good (first or upper second) first 
degree (preferably with a large statistical component) and a 
postgraduate qualification in medical statistics (or a closely related 
subject). They should preferably have least 3 years experience working 
as a medical statistician, but more (or less) experienced candidates are 
welcome to apply. Applicants should be fluent in key aspects of study 
design and analysis, particularly applied to randomised clinical trials, 
and is aware of the latest statistical techniques. Experience in the use 
of statistical packages is essential together with good verbal and 
written communication skills, including the ability to explain complex 
statistical issues to non-statisticians.

The appointment will be for two years in the first instance. Salary will 
be in the range (£25,472 - £40,157) per annum depending on 
qualifications and experience (Agenda for Change Band 6 or 7). The post 
is available immediately.
