It's not often I ask something of this mailing list, but can you help me? I am looking for published and (ideally) peer-reviewed references for the following:

1) use of turnitin formatively as a plagiarism awareness tool, and its positives or negatives
2) access to turnitin and whether it helps plagiarists to "get away with it" by cooking their reports to avoid detection, or not.

Jude Carroll has published on the use of turnitin as an educational tool, if memory serves. In the latter case, Fintan Culwin et al has done some work refuting the ability for plagiarists to massage reports. However, I am trying to win an academic argument with colleagues here, so the weight of published work to cite would really help me make the case that students should be allowed to submit drafts and be advised on the results prior to submitting a final dissertation. Can you provide references to work you are aware of, to allow me to produce a definitive list?
