Hello Sarah et al
In Australia we are midway through a large NHMRC funded prospective cohort study in New South Wales and the South Island of New Zealand  -  comparing the outcomes for women who planned to give birth in a primary maternity unit (similar to a free standing birth centre), or a large tertiary hospital. We are looking at outcomes such as the health of women and infants; and reasons for transfer etc. women's views; and  midwives and obstetricians views. In addition we will report on the six week and six month follow up for some women.
The EMU study   -  evaluating midwifery units - protocol is currently being prepared for submission.  Please don't hesitate to contact us for info and resources.

Hi Sarah,

The study comparing care in the Netherlands and the Flanders in Belgium may provide some information - though slightly obliquely.

Best wishes

Marianne

Subject: Intrapartum transfer from a free-standing birth centre

Hi everyone,

I'm a midwife currently working in a free-standing birth centre in East London and am just about to start my Msc major project whereby I will be interviewing women about their experience of intrapartum transfer to hospital and how this impacted on their birth experience.

On writing up my research proposal earlier this year I found only a handful of primary research articles around this topic... most of which were focussed from home to hospital.

Does anyone know of any research/information that may be of help to me.

Many thanks in advance!

Sarah
