Student champion pilot is in full swing…
NHS Evidence is piloting a Student Champion Scheme designed to equip health and medical students with a practical knowledge of how the service can help them in their academic and professional careers. Five nursing student champions have been recruited from Huddersfield University across mental health, child health, adult and learning disabilities specialities. Last week they presented NHS Evidence learning sessions to their peers in the University’s Harold Wilson building. Each of the sessions - delivered in core curriculum time - were attended by around 30-40 student nurses. This was further supported by fellow student champions from the pharmacy discipline, who were keen to intervene and learn in preparation for their own sessions to be presented in October.

Student champions opened their 60 minute learning sessions by giving personal examples of how NHS Evidence had recently helped them, either in a clinical setting or academic assignment. Key features of the service were also demonstrated, including accreditation, personalisation and the specialist collections.

The champions went on to demonstrate how to search for information, how to refine it using the various navigators and how to save searches. All search examples within the session were based on the current curriculum being studied by the students. This also stimulated more interest and enthusiasm.

The students were given tasks to take away and complete using NHS Evidence in their own time and setting, via pre-set search questions (individualised to their own disciplines and fields of interest). Model answers are to be provided to them electronically after 4-6 weeks, allowing time for the students to become more familiar with the service.

The sessions were very well received, with many student nurses commenting that they wish NHS Evidence had been available even earlier in their academic studies. One of the student champion also presented to another discipline as well as her own and still managed to deliver with confidence and passion.

The programme lead, Dr Mahendra Patel later commented on how he was proud of the students and their commitment in making NHS Evidence an essential feature of their regular learning programme. The student champions' ability to deliver the learning sessions without any professional  assistance, and to tackle any questions posed with competency and accuracy was encouraging- especially as they had no experience of presenting an organised and formal learning session before.

Your questions answered…

In each update, we will respond to one of the questions you have put forward to the NHS Evidence enquiry handling team.

Question: How is NHS Evidence ensuring that end users are alerted to any service maintenance issues?

Answer: With the latest release, a new “home page box” was designed to sit underneath the main NHS Evidence search bar. This box is being used to alert end users about breaks in service at least 24 hours in advance. The feature was recently to alert users about essential maintenance which took place on 20th September.

NHS Evidence service update page

The NHS Evidence service update page outlines the current technical issues on the Health Information Resources website and gives an update on progress to resolve them. The page is updated weekly, following progress reports from the NHS Evidence operations team. To access the page go to: http://www.evidence.nhs.uk/aboutus/Pages/Service.aspx.

*Please note that due to technical issues, it has not been possible to update the orphan page. The IT team are currently working to resolve these issues.*

User research update

The NHS Evidence User Research team recent engaged with NHS Evidence users via online surveys, in-depth interviews and telephone interviews. Results from the final report are listed below:

·         Many of those who use NHS Evidence do so regularly – nearly half said that they visit the site once a week or more often

·         Around half also conduct detailed literature reviews on the website. Those who do are most likely to favour Ovid and EBSCO as interfaces

·         Eight out of ten visitors to the site say that they are able to find at least some of what they are searching for

·         Eight in ten healthcare professionals agree that NHS Evidence helps professionals to find the most up to date health and social care information, and seven in ten agree that it improves the quality of information to clinicians

·         Half of respondents agree that it is a ‘one stop shop’ for health information. There is confidence in the information which is there. Nine in ten say that they feel confident that the information is robust.
