Young people's heritage projects in the spotlight

Since 2003, the Heritage Lottery Fund's (HLF) Young Roots programme has given over £22million to heritage projects led by young people. Now the Northern Stars young-filmmakers academy has produced a short film inspiring even more young people to get involved, showing some of the varied projects we have funded, and explaining how to apply for a grant.

The Young Roots Files highlights projects such as 'Family tree' in Cambridgeshire, which helped young people with Asperger's syndrome explore their family history. The young filmmakers also put the spotlight on 'Exploring Burnley's industrial fells' - a project that involved young people excluded from mainstream education in creating a mountain-bike trail unlocking East Lancashire's industrial past. The other projects in the film involved young people volunteering in the natural environment, creating a play inspired by archive records and exploring urban architecture.

Rachel Dixon, 17, director of 'The Young Roots Files', said:

"I have learnt so many new skills by making this film and it is great experience for me as I want to work in the film industry. The HLF Young Roots programme is a fun way for young people to explore heritage. I think it's important that young people see this film to witness the massive benefits that can be gained from taking part in projects like these."

Watch the film on the HLF website at http://www.hlf.org.uk/HowToApply/programmes/Pages/youngroots.aspx

HLF's Young Roots programme gives grants between £3,000 and £25,000 and encourages young people aged 13-25 to take a lead in heritage projects. With the support of youth and heritage organisations, young people volunteer time and ideas, develop new skills, build confidence and engage with local communities, learning about and shaping their heritage along the way.

Young Roots is a rolling programme with no deadlines for applications. Decisions are reached within just 10 weeks. We advise you contact us by phone: 020 7591 6000 or email: [log in to unmask] before making an application. We are on hand to provide help and guidance throughout the process.

Please contact the HLF team in your region or country if you would like to apply. For further information see www.hlf.org.uk
