The Department of Geography at the National University of Singapore offers Bachelor’s, Master’s and Doctoral degrees in Social Sciences and stands among the top Geography departments in the world. Its teaching and research strengths are in the areas of Critical Social/Cultural Geographies in/of Asia; Politics, Economies, and Space; and Tropical Environmental Change. The Department comprises an international mix of about 30 faculty members; in terms of students, the department has over 300 undergraduate majors and some 35 graduate students. The Department is poised to enhance its graduate program and research agenda in the competitive global academic arena, while maintaining its strong commitment to undergraduate education. We invite applications for positions (Assistant, Associate or Full Professor) in three core research areas:

Social/Cultural Geography (2 positions, any rank)
Candidates should be able to contribute to cutting edge research and teaching in Social/Cultural Geography. Candidates with expertise in any area of Social/Cultural Geography are welcome to apply, but research and teaching activities should complement and help to expand existing activities of the Department’s “Critical Social/Cultural Geographies in/of Asia” research group. We particularly encourage applicants with interests in urban studies, tourism or migration/mobilities. Previous experience of researching in/on Asia is not essential but candidates must be able and willing to develop research projects in the region.

Political-Economic Geography (1 position, Associate Professor/Professor)
Candidates should be a senior academic who can contribute to cutting edge research and teaching in political-economic geography, especially in the politics of development, including but not exclusively the geopolitics of borderland issues and the politico-economic transformations. Preference will be given to candidates with research experience and expertise in the context of Asia. The candidate’s research and teaching activities should complement the Department’s existing research excellence in the “Politics, Economies, and Space” (PEAS) research group.

Physical Geography/Tropical Environmental Change (1 position, any rank)
The broad focus of the Tropical Environmental Change research group is temporal and spatial interactions of climate, water and landscapes within tropical environments, particularly in the Asia-Pacific Region with the aim of improving understanding of tropical environment process dynamics and the environmental consequences of rapid development, land-cover transformation and climate change. Candidates with research emphasis on coastal processes, climate science, or tropical environments are particularly encouraged to apply. Strong skills in GIS, remote sensing, and/or other types of environmental modeling would be advantageous for contributing to departmental research and teaching interests.

For Assistant Professor rank, appointees must hold a PhD at the time of appointment. Applicants applying for an advanced level position should demonstrate a strong publication record, extensive teaching experience, have an established research profile and track record in raising research funding. Human and physical geography candidates who are able to contribute to GIS teaching are particularly encouraged to apply. In terms of teaching and academic responsibilities, the successful candidates will be expected to:
a. teach at least two modules a year in the field of specialization which may be at the undergraduate level combined with some graduate teaching;
b. contribute to the Department’s internationally-recognized research activities; and
c. contribute to the Department’s administration.

Only shortlisted candidates will be notified and plans will be made for a campus visit and interview. A competitive remuneration package, based on qualifications and experience will be offered.
