Not a counter argument just an observation.  In my humble opinion 'knowing your organization' is a very important factor in being an effective records manager (and a business archivist at least).  I'm willing to be corrected by those that know more than me though.

Dear all,
 
At a number of records management conferences recently I’ve met numerous people who have been pitchforked into undertaking the RM function by their organisations, but who have no professional qualifications.  Presumably this is seen as a cheaper option than employing a professional.   No doubt it’s the same in archives.
