Reminder about the free Read the Past: Write the Future events

Places at some of these are filling up fast so book soon to get your first choice of date and venue:

This series of free half-day training events, full day seminars and twilight “meet an author” events, organised by Sarah Wilkie and associates, will take place through the autumn and into January 2011. The events will bring together museum, archive and library staff, education experts, publishers, authors and others to explore the ways in which literature-based activities can be used to engage children and young people with collections, with a particular focus on working with hard to reach groups and with different age groups.

The half-day training events will be held between October and December in Leeds, Manchester, London, Exeter, Great Missenden (the Roald Dahl Museum) and Birmingham, while the full day seminars will take place in January in London and West Bromwich. Speakers at the latter will include Tricia Kings from the highly successful Young Cultural Creators project and Jonathan Douglas of the National Literacy Trust.

The half-day events will feature a wide range of projects and initiatives from across the country, including:
· Birmingham Libraries’ “Stories from the Web” which developed from a local initiative into a nationally acclaimed and adopted scheme
· Preston Museum’s Talk for Writing project
· The Museum of London’s Stories of the World project which is engaging with adolescents with mental health problems
· Work with early years children in Kirklees
· Literature in Context projects at Bronte Parsonage and in Dorset

Twilight sessions will be held in London and Birmingham. They will provide a relaxed atmosphere in which to learn more about the world of children’s publishing and children’s literature, meet an author and network over a glass of wine.
