Educating for the real world symposium

Keynote ‘Developing a Curriculum for the Real World: a whole institution approach
Dr Deborah Peach, Queensland University of Technology, Australia

Over many years Queensland University of Technology (QUT) has benefited from a highly successful marketing campaign that positions QUT as the university for the real world. The branding focuses attention on real world courses and real world lecturers that result in positive employment and graduate outcomes. Yet there is ongoing debate about what is meant by real world learning and how the brand can heighten student and employer expectations leading to challenges in terms of teaching quality, skills taught, and overall satisfaction. This presentation considers recent university wide approaches to improving the relevance, structure, organisation and intentionality of the real world learning curriculum and raises further questions about how best to balance market demands with university mission.
