Position Announcement

Ethnomusicology

The University of Rochester’s Eastman School of Music and the School of Arts and 
Sciences are seeking applications for the position of Assistant Professor 
(tenure track) in ethnomusicology. The appointment will be 50% in the Musicology 
Department at Eastman, and 50% in the Music Department in the School of Arts and 
Sciences. Applicants can specialize in any area of ethnomusicology.  Candidates 
will be requested to supply evidence of outstanding ability in research and 
excellence in teaching. Potential teaching assignments range from undergraduate 
world music surveys and special topics courses, to graduate courses and seminars 
for Master’s and Doctoral students. Applicants must have completed the PhD by 
Sept. 1, 2011. 


The Eastman School’s Musicology Department offers a Master’s Degree in 
ethnomusicology, as well as a PhD in musicology with an ethnomusicology track. 
The College Music Department offers undergraduate programs in world music and a 
3+2 program in ethnomusicology, whereby a student earns both a BA in music and 
the MA in ethnomusicology. In addition, the University supports two Balinese 
Gamelan, a Zimbabwean mbira ensemble, and West African Drumming/Dancing 
ensembles, as well as the Sibley Music Library, the largest academic music 
library in North America.

Review of applications begins on October 18, 2010. To receive full 
consideration, please submit a letter of application, curriculum vitae, a 
statement on teaching and research, and three current letters of recommendation

The University of Alberta is seeking a Director for folkwaysAlive!, the 
University’s partnership with Smithsonian Folkways Recordings in Washington DC. 
Providing a home for the over two thousand Folkways Records donated to the 
University by company founder Moses Asch, folkwaysAlive! houses a digital 
archive to document local and national community traditions, provides research 
opportunities, and presents public performances that relate to and enhance the 
Folkways philosophy and mission. 


It is expected that the Director of folkwaysAlive! will have an established 
international career as a scholar, with expertise in the folk and popular music 
traditions of North America.  The academic appointment is expected to be with 
tenure at the rank of Associate, or Full Professor. The Directorship will be for 
a fixed, renewable term, to be negotiated at the time of hiring.

This is a reminder that the complete “Call for Papers-International Machaut 
Society at the International Congress on Medieval Studies, Kalamazoo, May 2011” 
can be viewed at the AMS-Announce archives for July 2010.

The International Machaut Society will sponsor three sessions at the congress:
* Resources for Machaut Research and Study (A Roundtable)
* Expression in Machaut
* Machaut in Fourteenth-Century Contexts

Proposals should include an abstract of no more than 300 words and a completed
