FACULTY POSITION IN MUSIC
UNIVERSITY OF PITTSBURGH  

The Department of Music of the University of Pittsburgh invites applications for 
a faculty position to begin September 1, 2011, pending budgetary approval. The 
appointment will be made at the level of Associate or Full Professor with 
tenure, and appropriately qualified candidates may be considered for appointment 
to the Andrew W. Mellon Chair of Music.

Position:      Senior Musicologist to lead the musicology program at the 
University of Pittsburgh and whose scholarship is at the forefront of research 
in musicology. We are particularly interested in a scholar specializing in music 
before 1850, but other specializations will also be considered.

Qualifications:     Applicants should have outstanding research records and be 
acknowledged leaders in their fields of expertise.

Duties:      Teach undergraduate courses and graduate seminars in musicology; 
direct theses and dissertations; conduct research and publish; participate 
actively in the profession; share in administrative responsibilities.

We are particularly interested in candidates whose interests could include 
contextual and/or performance studies, gender and sexuality, critical or source 
studies, history of music theory, or other innovative areas of research in 
musicology. We seek a scholar whose methodology and research expertise 
complement those of the current musicology faculty, and who can work across 
sub-disciplines within the department and with colleagues elsewhere in the 
University.  


The Department of Music offers the B.A. degree within a liberal arts school and 
M.A. and Ph.D. degrees in musicology, ethnomusicology, jazz studies, and 
composition and theory. The graduate program provides students with instruction 
in the histories, methodologies, theoretical frameworks and analytical 
techniques of the sub-disciplines, and encourages interaction across 
sub-disciplines. Further information is available at the Department?s Website:

strengthen its relationship across the university with other outstanding 
departments in the humanities and social sciences, and with university programs 
such as Medieval and Renaissance Studies, Cultural Studies, and Women?s Studies, 
as well as the University Center for International Studies with its six renowned 
centers: Asian, Latin American, Russian and East European, European Union, 
Global Studies, and International Business, and the newly formed Human
