Dear Matt

Birmingham Museum and Art Gallery might have some of these things,
especially the birds. They are housed at their study collections
centre, so Phil Watson would be the person to make contact with.

Subject: American taxidermy

Dear all,

BRLSI, in partnership with the American Museum in Britain, are putting
on a small short exhibition (March and April 2011) to accompany a
lecture series at the BRLSI about America. We want to produce an
exhibition about North American natural history, ecological damage, and
conservation, using taxidermy (we already have a couple of Passenger
Pigeons and a Bison head) and a collection of framed engravings and
lithographs from Audubon.

We need more specimens to accompany the prints, a list of the subjects
of which follows. Do any of the museums within reasonable driving
distance of Bath (South West/Midlands/ Wales) have some of these (or
other North American specimens that might suit) that we could borrow for
the exhibition?

MAMMALS:
Bobcat (Lynx rufus)
Mink (Neovison vison)
North American Oposum (Didelphis virginiana)
Skunk (either Conepatus leuconotus or Mephitis mephitis)
North American River Otter (Lontra canadensis)
Muskrat (Ondatra zibethicus)
Groundhog (Marmota monax)
Raccoon (Procyon lotor)

BIRDS:
Pine Swamp Warbler or Vigors Vireo (Dendroica pinus?)
Ivory Gull (Pagophila eburnea)
Mangrove Cuckoo (Coccyzus minor)
Carbonated Warbler (Sylvia carbonata?)
Nashville Warbler (Vermivora ruficapilla)
Dusky Petrel (Dusky Backer Shearwater? Puffinus lherminieri?)
Manx Shearwater (Puffinus puffinus)
Kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla or brevirostris)
Blue Winged Warbler (Vermivora cyanoptera)
Yellow Breasted Warbler (Yellow Breasted Chat? Icteria virens?)
Great footed Hawk (Peregrine Falcon? Falco peregrinus)
King Eider Duck (Somateria spectabilis)
American Crossbill (Loxia curvirostra)
Northern Fulmar (Fulmarus glacialis)
Wilson's Snipe (Gallinago delicata)
Winter Wren (Troglodytes troglodytes)
Flying Squirrel (Glaucomys volans or Glaucomys sabrinus)

Regards,
Matt Williams
