** The Music and Science list is managed by the Institute of Musical Research (www.music.sas.ac.uk) as a bulletin board and discussion forum for researchers working at the shared boundaries of science and music. **

MESSAGE FOLLOWS:

Dear all,

A reminder that tomorrow at 2pm, Sebastian Heise, Michael Hlatky, and
Jörn Loviscach will present the seminar 'Novel User Interfaces for Audio
Retrieval and Processing, Episode 2'.

The seminar will take place in room 105 in the Electronic Engineering
Department, Queen Mary University of London, Mile End Road, London E1
4NS. Directions of how to get to Queen Mary are available at
http://www.elec.qmul.ac.uk/newsevents/c4dm-seminars.php as are details
of future seminars. The room is under access control, so people from
outside QM will need to contact C4DM to get in - the lab phone number is
+44 (0)20 7882 7480 and if I'm not available, anyone else in the lab
should be able to help. If you are coming from outside Queen Mary,
please let me know, so I can make sure no-one's stuck outside the doors.

All are welcome to attend. For those unable to do so, a video recording
of the seminar will be streamed live and also made available online
after a few days. Please see the above website for details.

If you wish to be added to / removed from our mailing list, please send
me an email and I'll be happy to do so.

*Tomorrow's seminar (7 September, 2pm):*

Title:
/*Novel User Interfaces for Audio Retrieval and Processing, Episode 2*/

Speakers:
*Sebastian Heise (h3e)
Michael Hlatky (Accessive Tools)
Jörn Loviscach (FH Bielefeld)*

Abstract:
Many tasks in digital music making, audio retrieval, and audio
processing become chores, with only few occasions for inspiration and
serendipity. This talk is a show & tell presentation of a range of
prototypes of enhanced user interfaces developed by the presenters to
bring back the fun. This includes:

* Multiple modified mice, color-changing buttons used as controllers for
music software (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-1sc8tXEiUA)

* Automatically adjusting audio effects and synths to produce a given
result (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=brGbu3ByWRQ)

* Projecting the fingering onto a bass guitar's fretboard
(http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LVkS464yKJU)

* A MIDI data editor that displays the actual waveforms of the
individual notes and allows editing the data based on the acoustic
result, not on the bare numbers
(http://www.h3e.eu/images/Drums_Choir_hk_double.png)

* Enabling tactile feedback on electronic music instruments - A
loudspeaker as a drumhead (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fTLkafr2Xp8)

* Setting up complicated audio effects with only two buttons

Bios:
Sebastian Heise (http://h3e.eu) is a HCI researcher, software developer
and musician. He holds a Master's degree in computer science from the
University of Applied Sciences Bremen and has worked with the Gauselman
Group as sound designer for gambling machines. He has published a series
of papers at AES conventions and the SIGCHI and SIGTEI conferences about
novel user interfaces for audio applications.

Michael Hlatky (http://www.accessive-tools.com) is an entrepreneur and
advisor, who has previously worked for the Audi AG and Bang&Olufsen as a
DSP researcher. He holds a Diploma degree from the University of Applied
Sciences Offenburg and a Master's degree from the University of Applied
Sciences Bremen.

Jörn Loviscach (http://www.j3L7h.de) is a professor of technical
mathematics and computer engineering at Fachhochschule Bielefeld
(University of Applied Sciences), Germany. In his research, he aims at
connecting human-computer interaction, visual computing, signal
processing, machine learning, and electronics. He is a regular
contributor to conferences such as SIGGRAPH, Eurographics, AES
Convention, and ICMC. In addition, he has published numerous chapters in
book series such as Game Programming Gems and ShaderX Programming.
