JOB DESCRIPTION
The successful applicant will have a PhD or will be nearing the completion of a PhD. S/he will provide high quality teaching in the history of science, including its interaction with philosophy and the history of religion, for a range of students at undergraduate and taught postgraduate level. S/he will also perform administrative duties.
This fixed-term, full-time lectureship arises from an AHRC research fellowship awarded to Dr Matthew D Eddy and is tenable for six months from 1 January 2011. The successful candidate will contribute to the lively research culture of the Department, which has particular strengths in the History and Philosophy of Science and Medicine. Teaching experience at undergraduate level is essential. A publication record in the history of science, or allied topics in the cultural history of ideas, is desirable. The post is subject to standard probationary terms. Further information will be issued in the contract of employment.
RESPONSIBILITIES
The successful applicant will:
Provide teaching and examining for the following undergraduate modules: Introduction to the History and Philosophy of Science (Level 1 - history of science component circa 1550-1945) and History of Science and Religion (Level 2 - covering mainly the nineteenth century).
Supervise undergraduate dissertations within the history of science and allied topics in the history of medicine, religion and philosophy.
Contribute to the research culture of the Department of Philosophy and conduct research at the level required of full-time members of staff.
Perform administrative duties appropriate to the level of appointment, including exam board attendance.
Teach an MA module entitled ‘Science and the Enlightenment’
Supervise and examine MA essays for our programmes in Philosophy and in History and Philosophy of Science and Medicine.
ESSENTIAL
PhD awarded, submitted or near to completion
Ability to teach and examine the Department’s undergraduate modules on the Introduction to the History and Philosophy of Science (Level 1) and History of Science and Religion (Level 2).
Ability to supervise and examine undergraduate dissertations within the history of science and allied topics in the history of philosophy, religion and medicine.
Ability to teach an MA module on the Enlightenment and science.
Ability to supervise and examine MA assignments.
A willingness to contribute to the research culture of the Department of Philosophy.
A statement on 'research and publication plans of international standard'
Commitment to excellence in research-led teaching.
Willingness to engage with the whole range of departmental activities, including administration.
Plans for attracting external research income and/or a willingness to play a role in external research funding that may arise.
DESIRABLE
Have teaching experience in the history of science, or an allied field in the cultural history of ideas.
Have a publication record in history of science or an allied field in the cultural history of ideas.
