Members of the Department of the History of Science, Harvard University, are very sad to announce the sudden death of Professor John Murdoch on the evening of 16 September 2010. John's incisive mind, loud laugh, and vigorous commitment to scholarship will be much missed. His early career was divided between Paris and Madison: after a PhD in philosophy from Madison and a Fulbright to the Sorbonne, John came to Harvard as an Instructor in the history of science in 1957, followed by an interlude at Princeton, and then returned to Harvard in 1963. By 1967 he was full professor. In 2009, after a long and active career, filled with many students and publications, John was awarded the Sarton medal of the History of Science Society. A very short note about his achievements is on the departmental website and by the end of next week we hope to have a longer tribute available. A memorial book for his family is being kept at the Department. Inquiries and messages for the book can be sent to Ellen Guarente, on [log in to unmask] Unfortunately we do not yet know details of likely forthcoming memorial events but some will surely be planned.
