Have you found that print journal prices
have shot up again this year? Mine seem to – even on the information on
the renewal lists. And who knows what the final price will be. Are exchange
rates much worse this year than last year?

Hi,
I have resisted moving to e access on a
global scale for this reason –despite assurances from our suppliers that
this was the way forward (it clearly isn’t)
I was under the impression that PASA were
supposed to have some sort of “regulatory” influence on NHS
suppliers? Print prices alone are increased by a margin seemingly arbitrarily
set by the publishers. Budgets are at an all time low and there is a real
danger that subscriptions will dry up entirely and everything will be obtained
via Inter Library Loan from the British Library – which would still be
more cost effective than handing over vast sums to subscription agents.

I am also very concerned about this.
They indicated, at one time, that it shouldn’t cost more – but I
haven’t heard next year’s prices yet. It is such a backward
step to go back to print. But we may need to do so. We’re
having to cut journals each year - 13 more from the print list this year!
It was also annoying when the Mosby titles went across to Elsevier.
All we’re trying to do is provide a
service to our users in the way they now expect it. It’s actually
quite dispiriting.

Hi Lyn
Yes we have print + e and the price
increase would be 70% if we kept the same format.
Going e-only with the new
scheme will also be more costly.
Elsevier are trying to spin
this as a beneficial move saying it is a more flexible licence,
but it seems more of an arbitrary way of increasing prices and
cutttings their costs.
I have heard from others who have found
the same increase in costs and are going back to print only for some titles, I
am considering doing the same as some journals such as the Lancet
titles will increase greatly.
We are constantly hearing from publishers
about how they are aware of tight budgets and taking account of the recession
in their pricing, but there is little evidence in practice.

Hi Michael
we are also affected by this and according
to my calculations it will cost more than double (115%) to keep our print with
e top-ups. I am outraged but don't know what to do about it. Do you have e
top-ups or e-only? Plus VAT will be going up.........

Hi
We
recently received a notice from Elsevier to say that our licence with Science
Direct would expire at the end of the year because:
"the
tariff methodology for Elsevier Health Sciences titles to NHS institutions has
changed" and that we are to be shunted over to another Elsevier
product called Journals Consult.
I
am curious to know whether any other NHS libraries have had this sort of notice
and whether the change will significantly affected the prices of journals
they get from Elsevier.
