Subject: JISC TechWatch: New report: data mash-ups and the future of mapping

Sometimes referred to as the GeoWeb or Where 2.0, there is growing interest in the use of geospatial and geographical information in combination with Web-based information sources and services. This has been driven by the emergence of new and low-cost technologies such as high-spec digital cameras, handheld GPS location equipment, and increasing consumer interest in Web 2.0-style, user-generated content and data mash-ups.

These geospatial data mash-ups are also part of an emerging, richer information environment with greater integration of mobile applications, sensor platforms, e-science, mixed reality and semantic, machine-computable data. The report explains these developments and sets them in the context of a wider movement towards open data and the linking together of datasets over the Web. It also speculates on what these developments might mean for the future, particularly with respect to the way such data will be used in further and higher education.
