CRISPP Essay Prize 2010

CRISPP (Critical Review of Social and Political Philosophy) is pleased to announce that the winner of the 2010 £500 Essay Prize for the best article published in Volume 12 2009 is Tamar Meisels for her article Defining Terrorism – a typology (CRISSP 12.3 (2009) pp. 331 – 351) The judges of the competition, associate editors Cecile Laborde and Jonathan Wolff, both of UCL,  praised  Meisel's piece as an `extremely well-written, thoughtful article which breaks new ground in clarifying the contested concept of ‘terrorism’.It offers a persuasive, if controversial, defence of the claim that terrorism should be strictly defined and not confused with other forms of political violence that do not have the typical features of terrorism. ... This precise and carefully argued piece is likely to become an authoritative study of the concept of terrorism.'

The CRISPP Essay Prize is for an outstanding article that deploys philosophical analysis of any school or variety to examine some concrete policy issue, be it political, social or economic, domestic or international. The prize is awarded annually. All articles appearing in a given volume qualify for consideration. The 2011 prize will be awarded for articles appearing in Vol 13 (2010).
