Dear BARS Member,

I am writing to you on behalf of the Executive Committee. As UK members will know the UK Higher Education Funding Councils have recently requested the nomination of suitably qualified people to serve on the English Subject Panel of the 2014 Research Excellence Framework exercise. Subject associations and other organisations with an interest in research conducted by UK higher education institutions are invited to make nominations for this panel. The criteria for appointing panels is contained in paragraphs 51-58 of the document ?Units of Assessment and Recruitment of Panels? which is available at:

http://www.hefce.ac.uk/research/ref/pubs/2010/01_10/

BARS is one of the associations able to nominate to the HEFCE which is managing the exercise on behalf of the funding councils. It is important that our subject area is strongly represented on this panel. To this end, the Executive Committee is proposing to nominate those members of BARS who served on the last research assessment English subject panel (RAE2008): Professor Vivien Jones (Leeds), Professor Philip Martin (Sheffield Hallam), and Professor Fiona Robertson (UCE). The date for the submissions of nominations to HEFCE is 8 October. The Executive Committee would be grateful for any comments relating to this proposal from the membership of BARS and wishes to consult its full membership concerning this proposal. We would therefore invite the views of the membership to be sent to me as Chair of the Committee ([log in to unmask]), by Friday 24th September.

Yours sincerely

Peter Kitson

President, BARS
