As the former Archivist to the Alliance and Leicester Group Archives,
which was based within a warehouse environment, I do not see this as at
all unusual. The entire archive team of 2 were sent on a course with the
aim of obtaining Forklift Truck licences. This was actually essential to
our job as it was to enable us to operate a FLT in order to get pallets
of RM boxes down from 4 tier pallet racking. Unfortunately my inability
to steer a 3 wheel forklift truck forced me to abandon the course but my
colleague successfully passed the course with flying colours and still
holds his licence to this day even though we no longer operate in a
warehouse environment. Modern archivists have to have a whole range of
skills such as these in order to operate in an increasingly complex
market place
