Extending the discussion from Peter Kurilecz's post (which mailserve is refusing to display in this send message window!):

Agree that current year is a weak concept for a trigger point, but is End of Year is a valid trigger point. It should be definable as a date (31 March for End Financial Year in most large UK enterprises) and even to time (23:59 or 00.01 hr would seem sensible options)

have no problem with EOY being used as a trigger event. However in the software i configure we would have to create a specific trigger for each year as the application wants to know what year is ending

I have routinely written retention schedules with trigger of End Current Year and not had any adverse feedback from users.  The only challenge is making it clear which Year applies - parts of our organsiation  focus on Teaching Year (ends 31 July), others Financial Year (ends 31 March) and still others on Calendar Year (ends 31 December).

excellent idea here in the states you have different fiscal year ends for example in Virginia where I live the Fiscal year is July1 to June 30. The US federal fiscal year ends Sept 30th

and let us not forget the various lunar calendars to deal with, too.

I'll leave any discussion of date formats (day first or month first) and time zones to Peter!

I'll configure what ever way the customer wants ;-)

i much prefer this format YYYYMMDD
