Hi Karen,

Our mortuary attendants have yearly spirometry, usual immunisations check (hep B etc), and depending on what they will be doing, HAVS paper screens and possibly full HAVS assesments depending on if they are using power tools.

Hope that helps

Emma

Hi Karen

I would suggest that you start by considering  the chemicals that they use for embalming. The risk and safety phrases on the material data sheets should indicate what kind of health surveillance is required. I suspect that they will be exposed to substances similar to formaldehyde. Formaldehyde is a sensitising agent therefore skin and respiratory surveillance. They will be exposed to infectious materials including body fluids so protection against BBV will also be necessary.

As a starting point consider them along the lines of people who work in theatre. Have a look in the “Green Book” in relation to immunisations.

Best
Anne

Many thanks
