RWTH Aachen University
With 31,400 students and 10,000 employees, RWTH Aachen University is one of the leading universities and also the largest employer and training body in the region. Its teaching and research are closely connected to industry and are characterized by an international, innovative and interdisciplinary approach.

Our profile
The Fuel Design Center of RWTH Aachen University belongs to the Cluster of Excellence “Tailor Made Fuels from Biomass” (TMFB) and adopts an interdisciplinary approach towards research of new, biomass-based synthetic fuels. Design goals for potential fuels are sustainable production, high efficiency and low emissions.
The Junior Professorship “Model-Based Fuel Design” at the Fuel Design Center hosts a team of young researchers who work on hierarchical property prediction methods on the basis of quantum chemistry and classical approaches for fuel design.

(1) Your profile
The applicant must hold a PhD in physics, chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related discipline. Research experience with methods and software to determine reaction pathways, transition states and reaction rates is expected as well.
Programming experience and good knowledge in molecular dynamics are beneficial.

Job description
Within the Fuel Design Center you will utilize semi-empirical methods to identify relevant reaction pathways for the ignition of new bio fuels and calculate the rates of these reactions with accurate ab initio methods. These rates will be used together with cooperation partners working experimentally & theoretically to develop full and reduced mechanisms and to simulate the combustion process in an engine. Besides application, further development of the methods used is another important aspect of the project with special focus on multi-scale aspects.

(2) Your profile
The applicant must hold a M.Sc. or PhD degree in physics, chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related discipline. Knowledge in the field of equation of state models, preferably SAFT, is required as well.
Programming experience and a background in statistical physics and/or quantum mechanics are beneficial.

Job description
The focus of your work will be on the further development of methods to determine PC-SAFT model parameters from quantum mechanically computed molecular properties. Another topic will be the extension of the electrostatics part of the model.
You will utilize the models developed to answer various technical questions within cooperations: the isolation of drug molecules and the simulation of the injection of new fuels.

(3) Your profile
The applicant must hold a M.Sc. or PhD degree in physics, chemistry, chemical engineering, or a related discipline. Good knowledge in thermodynamics of mixtures is required.
Programming experience, a background in statistical physics and/or quantum mechanics and previous experiences with COSMO-RS are beneficial.

Job description
The focus of your work will be on the further development of the COSMO-RS model. You will then utilize the model developed to answer various technical questions within cooperations: e.g. the design of solvent systems for liquid separation membranes, for the production of bio-fuels, and for other chemical processes.

Our offer
The candidate will be a regular employee for a fixed term of 2 years with a possibility of extension. This is a full-time position and the salary is according to the Public service salary scale TV-L/ E 13 details depending on the age, status and experience of the candidate.
Applications from female candidates are explicitly welcome. In cases of equal qualification, aptitude and expertise of the applicants, female applicants will be given preference for those salary groups and careers in which female candidates are underrepresented, unless there are preponderant reasons to give preference to another applicant.
Please refer to § 8 Article 6 of the North Rhine-Westphalian Equal Opportunities Act (Landesgleichstellungsgesetz NRW)
Applications from eligible disabled persons are welcome.
