A postdoctoral position is available in the laboratory of Professor Tony Hynes at the University of Miami, Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science. The postdoctoral associate currently working on these projects has been offered a permanent job and this position is available immediately. The successful candidate will participate in projects designed to better understand the chemical cycling of mercury in the atmosphere. Current projects include 1) development of laser based sensors for the detection of gaseous elemental mercury and reactive gaseous mercury (RGM) 2) studies of the chemistry of RGM is power plant plumes 3) deployment of  mercury sensors in a light aircraft. The goals include the development of a sensor for the detection of gas phase elemental mercury, Hg(0), with the sensitivity, temporal resolution and precision that will allow Hg(0) flux measurements to be made using the eddy correlation technique.  The same instrument can be reconfigured to operate with presampling on denuders for the sampling of RGM. It also shows promise for the speciation of RGM using programmable thermal decomposition /desorption from denuders. Initial work on the project is described in:

D. Bauer et al., J. Environ. Monit. 4, 339, 2002.

D. Bauer et al., J. Photochem. Photobio, 57, 247, 2003.

Applicants should have a Ph.D. in Chemistry, Physics, Environmental

Science or a related discipline. Expertise in ultrasensitive analytical

chemistry, particularly analytical laser spectroscopy, trace metal chemistry, measurement of gas phase elemental mercury at ambient levels and measurement of atmospheric trace gases, particularly aircraft measurements, would be an advantage.

The Rosenstiel School of Marine and Atmospheric Science, established in

1943, is located on Virginia Key in Biscayne Bay and has some 100

faculty, 250 staff, 250 graduate students, and 100 undergraduates. It is

one of the leading oceanographic research and education institutions in

the world and is the only subtropical institute of its kind in the

continental United States. Additional information can be found on the

School Website: www.rsmas.miami.edu <http://www.rsmas.miami.edu> .

Applicants should send a cv to Tony Hynes: [log in to unmask].
