medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture Re: [M-R] priestīs spades

It’s not a spade, it’s a ferule or instrument to slap lazy or unwilling pupils in school. In Dutch: a “plak”.

I think I still have the photos and could send them off list - but also Marjorie Greene kindly put the photos on her medrelart site for me. I think the problem with identifying the artifact as a spade is that it's quite small - only about a foot long.

medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture

Some time ago there was a discussion on this list about something that looked like a spade but
turned out to have an educational association (sorry, my mind was taken up with other things at
the time, I do remember some nice pictures from I think Henk . . .)
I believe there was mention of a spade as a possible liturgical object, which would have been used to
throw the first earth on the coffin of someone being buried. Can anyone provide references for
this (or remind me what the thread was called, and how to get to the archive?)
Meg
