Where is the national
message/mission statement/organised proactive national advocacy/lobby that is
not simply reactive? Should it be some ‘coalition’ and who should be leading
it/funding it? Whilst I agree in our own authorities we do need to
promote/develop/advocate locally I feel we do lack a strong co-ordinated
proactive, clear national message and campaign/’lift test’ message we can all
use to support local advocacy very urgently.
Feature done on us
last night in Meridian tonight, local news programme I
thought was quite positive-see link below. The link does not include the
subsequent interview with Ed Vaizey where he was given a relatively hard time
by the interviewer (the link does include some annoying
adverts.)

Nor was I
particularly impressed with the Radio 5 Live so-called debate. Whilst we
did have a brief piece from Miranda McKearney, which did well to promote the
summer reading challenge and a librarian from Telford fighting our corner, the piece seemed to
underline the old stereotypical image of libraries and librarians. On
several occasions Shelagh Fogarty simply played to this – we had to have the
giggly comment about not saying "shhh" once, when thanking the librarian from
Telford, and they had to have someone of course who still had a book in their
possession from when they were a child so how big are the fines and dare I go
back in????
Considering the
quality of some of the debates they have, I felt we were let down, and that
the issue wasn't taken as a serious topic.

I have to say I
found the item on BBC One TV this morning very disappointing. The BBC
introduced the item with a very negative slant. “The number of people
visiting their local library in the last year has dropped to 50% of the
population” – which other public service has 50% of the population making use
of its services? This is a footfall which many services, both public and
private, would die for. The person from the Ideas Store unfortunately
didn’t argue the case for libraries very well – there was nothing about
libraries and literacy, children’s reading challenge during the summer to
support the reading gap left by school holidays, libraries and the
provision of accurate and current information, libraries changing people’s
lives through exposure to new ideas etc etc.
Good to have
this level of exposure though!
