What always puzzles me is that books (some of them anyway) have got cheaper and public libraries (quite a few of them anyway) have got much more efficient at book buying, via supplier selection, consortium purchasing etc.
So you would expect less to be spent on books.
Nobody ever tries to quantify the effect of all this.
