Hi Tim,

What’s the purpose of this off-board interrogation?

And why did you feel it necessary to Cc in my boss?

Warmest regards,

Rob

so, if use is going down, why should the public pay for it?    Why should they pay your salary?

Who is responsible for providing value for their money?

Hi Tim,

I’ve just re-read my post and… no… I’m pretty sure I didn’t blame anyone.

Robert

So who are you blaming for the fall in use?  Because it is dramatic and real

Is it the press ?  Or the public?  or your marketing ?

David makes an excellent point. Also, at least as important as the books, the internet access, the information… libraries are a free public space. You don’t have to pay to get in, you don’t have to pay to use (most of) the resources, it’s not by invitation only, you don’t have to qualify your presence. If you’re young, old, poor, homeless, newly arrived, vulnerable, mentally ill, whatever… you’re welcome.

As someone who joined this forum to promote a website designed to help libraries stage workshops, the points that strike home to me in this discussion are those that refer to the next generation's use of libraries, and the use of spaces within libraries.  Things like cartooning workshops, classes in literacy, reading group meetings, and similar ways of interacting with the public in a way that encourages library use, have proven their value but are still not being employed as widely as they should be.  These things extend the value of libraries as educational facilities for the community and thus make them less dispensible in the eyes of councils who might be willing to make cuts in the service.  Any library not doing workshops of this kind now, should start doing them if they possibly can.  It can only help them in their battles to prevent closures.
