No doubt if the Police were not retaining details of people reporting crimes and then it came to light they had been sent to dozens of hoax calls with no means to trace the caller as no details had been kept the press would also have been slating them!!! Damned if they do and damned if they don't but providing they are maintaining the database appropriately I see no issue. That the police record details of individuals reporting crime sounds like a normal and necessary part of their policing function, providing of course the database is kept in line with the DPA principles. That is not the same as the creation and retention of thousands of intelligence files on innocent people. Details of more than 180,000 people are on the force's information management system, despite only a fraction being even suspected of any crime. Privacy campaigners have condemned the force, after an investigation by The Press found information on innocent informants was stored along with that of suspects and vulnerable complainants. The database contains information on 38,259 suspects and 181,917 people who have simply reported information.
