Beyond Borders: West Africa 2010 - Writing a new story

September 2010 a group of students from the School of Oriental and African Studies (SOAS), University of London, will embark on a tour of Ghana, Togo, and Nigeria with the aim to promote cross-cultural dialogue, mutual understanding and create a new network of exchange, dedicated to encouraging long term development through education.

Beyond Borders: West Africa 2010 is a tour that is attempting to write a new West African story through the convoy of London based students meeting and learning from the regions students, activists, grass roots communities, and volunteering with projects in building infrastructure, supporting families, and making physical contributions in an attempt to great new network between London and West Africa committed to the regions long term development.

Through education and mediums of literature, sport, and art, development can be returned to the peak of international agenda. Beyond Borders will use football as a vehicle for engagement and change. During the past 100 years the provision, access, and control of football space became a crucial site of struggle between Africans and the local political authorities. It has become a political instrument, and to this day provides a contrast to the usual pictures of a pitiful and lost continent.

There are still a number of costs that the students are yet to pay for and are currently racing against time trying to raise a further £2,000 before 1st September 2010 or the project will be in jeopardy.

The £2,000 is to: pay for food and board with the African communities that they will be staying with; travel between countries; to contribute to the grass roots charities such as Disaster Volunteers of Ghana (DIVOG) that we will be volunteering with.

Please help these students by making a tiny donation of  £5.00 online through the giving page at:  http://soasbeyondborders.tumblr.com/

Thank you.
