Hi Shane
Absolutely agree. What I probably should have made clearer is that the GEEP is selected by the person him/herself and modified in line with what they require.. Formalising a GEEP procedure is really a way of making sure that staff think about this, and have some guidance to hand so that when someone comes.
Like virtually every policy it's effectiveness is down to the quality of the people involved in implementing it.

Kind regards

Susan

Thanks for the clarification, Susan. I can see how these GEEPs can be helpful. Can I point out a couple of possible drawbacks, just so that people can try to work around them?

The main drawback is the risk of assumptions or stereotyping. Staff may make assumptions, such as 'all wheelchair users need the evac chair', because that's what the GEEP suggests for wheelchair users. Some wheelchair users may prefer to bump themselves down the stairs, depending on the number of stairs involved, their upper body strength and their general health.. The GEEP provides a good template for assisting wheelchair users, but should not be seen as a mandatory approach for everybody.

The other danger is that it may need an unskilled receptionist to effectively carry out a 'risk assessment' in deciding what is the best GEEP for anybody arriving at the desk.

Best regards

Shane

Hi Shane

I'm not sure if this is the general usage, but we were told that a PEEP - personal emergency egress plan was what we would have for named members of staff, and a GEEP - generic emergency egress plan was the sort of thing which libraries or public buildings might have for categories of visitors where you might not know the person in advance of them attending your building.
So, for example, if we were having a public meeting in our building (which we should hold downstairs because we wouldn't know in advance who was coming), as the public came in they would see a notice or be asked by the receptionist if they required any assistance in leaving the building.
Depending on the response, they might be offered one of a range of generic EEPs ie a GEEP. This sounds really complicated, but it was just a way of trying to simplify things for reception or Hall keeping staff. If someone turned up at a meeting and said they might need a buddy to walk with them to the entrance, the receptionist/host could refer to the buddy system GEEP and know what to do. If the person said they would require a wheelchair accessible exit again, the organiser would refer to another GEEP which in this case would say that they had to inform the Hall Keepers.
If this is still unclear, please just give me a ring.

Best wishes
Susan

Hi Susan

Is a GEEP some variation of a PEEP? Or perhaps this is just a terminology issue?

Thanks

Dear Peter

I have just picked this up so apologies if someone has already suggested this. We try to encourage all staff, when sending out any sort of invitation to a meeting, to include the following statement.

Please let us know if you have any disability, diversity or dietary requirements. Please also let us know if you think you may have difficulty getting out of the building in the event of an emergency

In order for people to make any sort of reasonable judgement in relation to the second sentence we would include some background information about the venue and wherever possible try to hold meetings in accessible venues.

We also have notices up at our reception points asking people to let us know if they have any concerns about leaving the building in the event of an emergency. Based on the response to the original question in the invitation, organisers of meetings are, if required, supposed to follow an appropriate GEEP for whoever is attending, and inform any relevant members
of staff (eg Hall keepers if we required an EVAC chair evacuation).

Of course, this is what is supposed to happen but it often doesn't! It also doesn't help if people don't let you know until they arrive, but it is a start and does raise the issue in the mind of those organising meetings.

Best wishes

Susan

Subject: PEEPS

Hi Everybody

In my spare time! I am a volunteer with a national 1st Aid organisation.

I am currently revamping their H and S Policy.
Several of the buildings are used for training external 1st Aid courses.
All buildings are used regularly (Once/twice a week) for member training).

Where I work full time we have PEEPS for staff with disabilities. It occures to me we should have the same for all buildings where there is a delegate with a disability.

However although we may know a delegate has a disability we may not know the full implications until they arrive for the course.

Has anyone got any experience of this and can advise me.

Yours

Peter
