As I'm now retired, I'm not certain what my old lab does now. However, in my days (and doesn't that make me feel old), we asked for control sample preferably from the doctor making the original request. If the control was within the reference range, we had more confidence that the batch of tubes, reagents etc was OK Regards Elliott ________________________________ From: Clinical biochemistry discussion list [[log in to unmask]] On Behalf Of COLLINS MICHAEL (RM1) Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital [[log in to unmask]] Sent: 13 August 2010 13:07 To: [log in to unmask] Subject: Re: Ammonia contamination - paediatric tubes One problem with ammonia assays is that lab water can quickly become contaminated. This can cause complications with manual dilutions unless a blank is run using water taken from the same source at the same time. You need to ensure that the “blank” solution is not itself contaminated by running a blank not placed in the paediatric tube. When we experienced problems previously, we ran a 'blank' sample from the same batch alongside each patient sample, but this practise was not continued routinely. I was just wondering if other labs did/ didn't always run blanks for ammonia, in routine practise? Those that do, what procedures do you follow?
