Job opportunity: Research Programme Facilitator

The Department of Mathematics at the University of Surrey wishes to appoint a Facilitator/Manager for the EPSRC-funded research programme Models and Mathematics in Life and Social Sciences (MILES). MILES is a programme of networking and idea-generation activities that aims to create new research collaborations between mathematics and the physical sciences on the one hand and the life and social sciences on the other.

Creativity and a confident communication style together with sound organisational skills are essential for success in this job. The post holder will require good insight into the process of research as a creative and collaborative endeavour, and an understanding of the factors that can challenge or frustrate it, in order to design programme events that will encourage research creativity. Empathy with researchers, their concerns and aspirations will be important. Strong interpersonal skills will be necessary to engage effectively with the full range of programme participants and suppliers that will include academics, postdoctoral researchers, PhD research students, R&D workers in commerce and industry, external speakers, venue managers, caterers, external professional facilitators and others. The post holder will also be expected to liaise as necessary with administrative departments and services within the university.

The Facilitator will:

1. Arrange, publicise, run and facilitate people-focused research events (e.g. sandpits, workshops, research fairs, Cafés Scientifiques) on- and off-campus;
2. Manage the administrative aspects of an internal grant bidding process;
3. Facilitate the formation of new research collaborations across the university, for example by `matchmaking’ researchers with complementary expertise;
4. Advise programme participants as to suitable external sources of funding for future research grant bids;
5. Assist with monitoring the impact of the MILES programme;
6. Assist with the maintenance of the programme website and wiki.

Ideally the Facilitator will be in post by October 2010. The post is available for 36 months.

Salary: up to £31,671 per annum (subject to experience and qualifications).
