*Crafting the Immaterial material for Expressive Interfaces and Interactions * CALL For Workshop Participation at the 7th Design and Emotion Conference (October 4-7, 2010) in Chicago <http://www.id.iit.edu/de2010/index.html> *“The design activity it self is changing because the designer’s tools are becoming immaterial, as are the lives of those to whom the products are marketed. Design by holographic models may still be far in the future, but the concrete activity of design even now partakes substantially of immaterial techniques, or usage of artificial representations, images, and diagrams composed by image-generating machines.” -Abraham A. Moles* Since the fields of interaction and service design rely on motion and interaction as their material, there is a substantial need to address the nature of such materiality, and to develop methods to work and communicate with its immateriality. Our primary goal with this workshop is to investigate features of a novel tool to enable designers to more easily explore immaterial material for creativity and effectiveness in their designs, and enable designers to seed expressions for emotional and felt-life qualities in their design work. Crafting immaterial materiality effectively will also lead designers to grow better communication channels with their peers in collaborative environments. We would like to invite participants from a diverse set of backgrounds. You can be a design professional either working solo or collaboratively; an educator teaching interaction and service design, or blending them with one of the core graphic, product, architecture design curricula. * Call for Position Papers* Share a research problem you are tackling, or a story of a past project in the form of a case study. Your position paper can be related to designing of interactive behaviors, challenges of crafting the immaterial materiality, expressing emotional and felt-life qualities on interfaces and interactions. Please send a short bio (around 100 words) and a position paper (500~1000 words) by *July 31, 2010 to [log in to unmask]* Download the *template* for your position paper at http://www.id.iit.edu/de2010/templates/DE10-Papertemplate.doc , All the information and updates can be found at the workshop website: http://kursatozenc.com/immaterial/ Regards, Fatih Kursat Ozenc, School of Design, Carnegie Mellon Miso Kim, School of Design, Carnegie Mellon John Zimmerman, School of Design&HCII, Carnegie Mellon
