Subject: Re: [OCC-HEALTH] Salaries and Jobs

Another philosophical tack - do you thnk it may be that as "nurses" employers are more likely to bung us in a banding of salary AND we are more likely to to be more accepting of this? Most physicians that I know negotiate their own salary, and some wouldnt get out of bed for less than £xxxx (a bit like that supermodel), because they know they do a good job and are worth the expenditure. I think its a cultural doctor/nurse thing that will continue beyond my career lifetime.

Like all of us I get contacted by agencies who ask me whether I`m looking for a new position etc but always expect me to go for positions with salaries far below my current one , . and are faintly bemused I think when I say I`m not interested. I dont think nurses as a body are particularly good at demanding to be paid what we we are worth ( please see history of NHS) and have a kind of reluctance to get frankly arsey about it.

Therefore - yes I think all of the below applies, and we may have ourselves to blame for it. Years ago I  had a stint of being self employed and  I remember distinctly being very embarrassed talking about money, and when negotiating didnt want to appear "greedy". They told me afterwards I shouldnt have settled for waht I got as they were intending to go higher as they knew I could do a good job and were willing to pay for it.

Go out and look at what people like complementary practitioners are charging on an hourly rate for their services and then look at what we as a profession are accepting after at least 3 years training plus experience plus additional quals

However - now in the financial state that we are in we all may need to take what we get .....
