medieval-religion: Scholarly discussions of medieval religion and culture Re: [M-R] burial practices -- more context
No, I don't think this one is in Finucane - I was just using him as an example of the way that incidental details in miracle stories can be useful.
And I do take John's point that detail can be misleading - are you suggesting that the writers would have incorporated a bizarre detail like that because the incident takes place in a comparatively remote area?
Susan, how crucial is the binding of the hands and feet to the actual story? That might help.

Best wishes

Maddy -and John- specifically Welsh or Welsh border perhaps (I' think the area was in "English" hands at the time, though that would not exclude the persistence there of local customs). This is not what I would call a miracle 'story' but rather one of the sworn depositions at the Cantilupe canonization inquiry. I guess I would like to get a sense of how local the local custom was. I don't think Finucane said anything about it, though I may be wrong.

I've picked up on this after being away. Does your
'secundum loci illius consuetudinem'
imply a specifically Welsh practice - it's not something I'd come across but I can ask around.

Dear all
More context -- I was trying to spare you too much detail in the
first instance. The evidence comes from descriptions of a miracle in
which a young boy fell from a bridge and drowned.  Initially there
was some uncertainty about what to do and some people suggested  that
"manus et pedes ipsius Willelmi coniungerentur et ligarentur et
apponeretur, secundum loci illius consuetudinem, prope murum, et
uigilaretur circa eum per total noctem et prepararetur sepultura".
The place -- English/Welsh border, the parish of New Radnor; the date 1305.

Apologies for being unclear first time round.

Sue

Thanks Marjorie for your thoughts. I  should have specified the
context, which is early C14 England.  The idea seems to be not that
the corpse would be buried by the wall but placed by a wall with
hands and feet tied while funeral preparations were made.

Sue

'm sure I should have been able to find this information easily, but
have failed to do so. Has anyone encountered a practice in which a
corpse is placed next to a wall with hands and feet bound in
preparation for burial?

Sue
