Rhiannon I suggest having a look at http://moodle.org/ I haven't tried it myself but have heard good things about it from colleagues in the education sector. I have used Confluence for our Intranet. It is a good tool but we have had some problems with the performance of some of the plug-ins. Best of luck with it.
