Hi James, I used the Google Merchant Centre in a previous role. We automatically generated a tab-delimited file containing our products, and latest prices, and let Google parse this. The tab-delimited file was the easiest approach in our circumstances - you can also supply an XML file, or work directly with their API to supply (and more quickly update) your product information. Setup was minimal and, since the file was automatically generated, maintenance was virtually nil. Where we were competitive on price (compared with other retailers using Google Product Search), or offering a relatively unusual or hard-to-obtain item, a significant proportion of our traffic came from Product Search. The very modest effort required to get our products listed seemed well worth it for the exposure generated. Not exactly West Mids, but I'm sure Kew could host a session if a reasonably accessible/central venue was needed.
