Dear Li xing;

I agree with you that IB Chinese Ab is quite tough for complete beginners;
because of the nature of Chinese handwriting. My view is that it doesn't
matter how many hours you teach the students, it's their dedication and
willingness towards the language that counts the most. I have taught IB
Chinese A2 for just 2 hours a week and I am expecting good result.

You will know that the Funding and fairness is important in any department.

Teach students good time management with your subject at least! Lots Small
to do lists!

Regards,

Suzie

Subject: teaching hours for IB Chinese ab
Importance: High

Dear all,

I currently have 7 Six Form English students doing IB Chinese ab. They just
started last year September as complete beginners and will take external
exams in May 2011.

I was given 3.30 teaching hours per week for 34 weeks during the first year
and only 2.20 hours for 27 weeks in the second year. After communicating
with other IB Chinese teachers on the Chinese Annual Conference, I feel even
stronger that the students need more teaching hours in their second year.
However, my line manager needs to see very strong evidence or statistics to
allow them to give more hours to Chinese than other European Languages.

If you got any evidence or statistics to support my request, could you
please kindly email me at [log in to unmask] ? It will be ideal if your
students are in a tertiary college and state funding is a crucial issue as
well.

Best Regards

LI Xing
