Hi,

One of our learned professors of Gastroenterology contacted us this morning requesting an abstract from a supplement of GUT. I know this request should be sent to the specialist list, however I believe this situation has thrown up an interesting point and should be shared more widely.

 

We checked the Gut website and supplement 2 (2009) wasn’t listed. The professor was adamant he has seen a reference so I e-mailed BMJ Journals to ask if such a supplement had been published. The reply received this afternoon is interesting in that it was published as a “CD-ROM” and attached to the print version of GUT, although they didn’t say which one. It is of course now out of print. For NHS libraries it does throw up an issue as we were all instructed to cancel all our BMJ Journal subscriptions (except BMJ) and thus no one should have received this CD-ROM. There may be another reason as to why it is a CD-ROM and not on their website, however they don’t mention this.

 

Surely this is technically in breach of the contract between the NHS and themselves as it restricts access to published content. If anyone out there does have the CD-ROM all we require is an abstract on page 184 by the author George, AT.
